ACRONYM: LJUBA
The aim of the project is to improve the condition of three qualifying habitat types – wet meadows with purple moor-grass, moist mesotrophic meadows with meadow foxtail and great burnet, and fens, and four qualifying species – fen orchid, and the butterflies false ringlet, the scarce large blue and the marsh fritillary in the Natura 2000 area Ljubljana Marsh. We want to provide appropriate living conditions for other organisms and their habitats by improving the condition of the aforementioned habitat types and species.
Ljubljana Marsh is one of the most important areas in Slovenia in terms of biodiversity, as it is the habitat of numerous rare, endangered, and protected animal and plant species. The condition of many species and their habitats in Ljubljana Marsh has deteriorated in recent decades, and one of the important reasons is change in agricultural use. In addition to the establishment of appropriate grassland management, one of the main tasks of the project is therefore to improve cooperation between the agricultural and nature conservation professions in the area.
GENERAL PROJECT OBJECTIVE
More efficient management and monitoring of the Natura 2000 status of the Ljubljana Marsh.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
Cooperation with agricultural land managers - advice on appropriate methods of grassland management that are friendly to plants and animals and their habitats, and at the same time, enable the long-term preservation of the balance in nature and an appropriate quality of life in the Ljubljana Marsh area.
- Establishment of long-term cooperation between the agricultural and nature conservation professions and connections with people living in the marsh.
- Conservation of grasslands in the Ljubljana Marshes.
- Removal of invasive alien goldenrod and meadow establishment.
- Improvement of the fen state in the overgrown valley Strajanov breg.
- Establishment and implementation of monitoring the status of four qualifying species and three qualifying habitat types.
- Collection of data on the status of selected poorly known endangered species.
- Monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of the measures in the Rural Development Programme 2014–2020 in the Ljubljana Mars area and preparing proposals for better adjustments of the future RDP.
- Informing the public about the progress and objectives of the project (project events, workshops, press conferences, events, publications, and announcements in the print media).
